A little bit about the Easter Lily…

Easter lilies are an ageless symbol of purity, grace and hope.

Lilies are buried in the earth, and emerge with new life and beautiful blossoms. Lilies grow from bulbs- like daffodils and tulips. They are symbols of joy, new life, new hope - and the resurrection of Jesus. The bulb symbolizes the tomb of Jesus, and the flower blossoms symbolize His life after death.

The Easter lily, the plant we think of most when we think of Easter, is not naturally a spring flower. Florists force them under controlled conditions to blossom in time for Easter. The beautiful, white, trumpet-shaped, fragrant, majestic flowers are a perfect symbol for a beautiful, flawless Savior.

Lilies are often called the "white-robed apostles of hope." Legend has it that beautiful white lilies sprung up in the Garden of Gethsemane where drops of Christ's sweat fell to the ground in his final hours of sorrow. Churches continue this tradition of Easter Lilies at Easter time by decorating alters and crosses with masses of Easter Lilies, to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and the hope of life everlasting.

The pure white lily has long been closely associated with the Virgin Mary. In early paintings, the Angel Gabriel is pictured extending to the Virgin Mary a branch of pure white lilies, announcing that she is to be the mother of the Christ Child. In other paintings, saints are pictured bringing vases full of white lilies to Mary and the infant Jesus. St. Joseph is depicted holding a lily-branch in his hand, indicating that his wife Mary was a virgin.

The legend is told that when the Virgin Mary’s tomb was visited three days after her burial, it was found empty save for bunches of majestic white lilies. Early writers and artists made the lily the emblem of the Annunciation, the Resurrection of the Virgin: the pure white petals signifying her spotless body and the golden anthers her soul glowing with heavenly light.

Interestingly however, during the Victorian era, churches viewed the Easter lily's stamens and pistils as overt symbols of sexuality. Fearing these parts of the flower would encourage impure thoughts, priests and ministers had the stamens and pistils removed!

The Easter Lily symbolizing the very essence of Easter; they are a beautiful reminder that Easter is a time for rejoicing and celebrating!

Another tradition says the lily sprang from the repentant tears of Eve as she went forth from Paradise.
